Abstract of article:Compare plastics, wood and steel stubbles with regard to weight, rigidity, water intake, corrosion, inspection and handling, indicating the applicable boundary of the different materials.

Plastics, wood and steel can all be part of a leg-pressure system, but they have different mechanics and management. UHMWPE or other engineering plastic pads are usually lightweight, non-smoking, resistant to multiple corrosive environments, and their surfaces and edges are easily cleaned; the planks are of wide source, easily fielded, but they contain water rates, scarries, cracks and fibre orientations that cause performance differences; steel plates are of high quality, strong and resistant to local pressure marks, but they are heavier, potentially corrosive, and require suitable lifting and skiding measures.

Handling is a common advantage of plastic pads. Rational sizes of products can be configured to lift hands to facilitate leasing and mobile operations; however, “light” does not mean that artificial moving limits are negligible, and large size thickness plates may still require two persons or machinery. The weight and state of the planks may be altered by water immersion, and it is more difficult to check after repeated nailing or crushing; steel plates usually require lifting points, forklifts or magnetic tools, and inappropriate handling of the edges carries the risk of cutting. The project should include transport, laying and recycling in the selection material, and not only compare the unit cost of the material.

Comparative characterization of plastics, wood and steel leg pads

In terms of rigidity, steel plates are usually high and are suitable for special designs that require local discontinuity support, but thin steel plates are also warpable and can slide on smooth and hard ground. Plastic pads have good resilience and impact, but they have to be sufficiently thick and area-controlled to bend; wood has different textures and cross-line properties and multiple layers need to be clearly laid. No material should cross a gutter or hole without engineering design, and multiples of random stacking may also reduce stability by slide between layers.

The standards of maintenance and conviction also differ. The plastic sheet is to examine the fractures, deep mouths, permanent bends, handholes stretching and pressured area damage; the plank is to be concerned with decay, cracking, crushing, pests and hidden water damage; and the steel plate is to be examined for severe rust, plastic deformation, welding and suspension points. When the surface is oiled, iced or fine, all three materials may lose friction and require cleaning and rebalancing. The material “durable” cannot be used indefinitely.

The selection shall return to the maximum retroactivity of the leg, the ground load, the size of the pedal, the environmental medium, the temperature, the conditions of handling, the inspection capacity and the full life-cycle cost. Some large suspensions will use a designed steel, wood and plastic combination system, which does not mean that any combination is safe. In the procurement of plastic leg pads, the material should be required to state, size difference, product weight, test basis and use limits, and the person in charge of the suspension should confirm his or her position in the overall support programme.
